MESSAGE TO FIFTH GLOBAL GREEN ECONOMY PROSPERITY FORUM
August 22, 2014

I am pleased to send greetings to the fifth Global Green Economy Prosperity Forum, hosted by the International Green Economy Association. The Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development recognized the green economy as an important tool for achieving sustainable development and eradicating poverty. With natural resources under growing pressure and the global population continuing to rise, the traditional economic growth model is no longer sustainable. We need a new development paradigm.

As the world’s most populous country, with the fastest growing economy and the greatest national greenhouse gas emissions, China has a global responsibility. During my many visits to China I have been encouraged by how the Government has made promoting the green economy a priority. By proactively addressing climate change and environmental degradation, China can have a profound impact on green growth at home and far beyond.

As the theme of this Forum highlights, we need “Green Growth Through Economic Transformation and Global Cooperation”. The fundamentals for green growth lie in technology, finance and capacity building. We must connect clean and sustainable technology with markets and finance and ensure these are available to all countries. I count on this gathering to address these fundamental issues and help us realize the future we want with a life of dignity for all.
